severe thunderstorm watch in effect Early this evening, conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts and large hail. Some of these thunderstorms may also cause flash floods due to rainfall amounts that will be added to the rain that has already fallen today. ### Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. special weather statement in effect Potentially significant rainfall amounts are expected this weekend. Generally, total amounts of 20 to 40 mm are expected for both days. However, the rain will be accompanied by scattered thunderstorms, which could boost rainfall amounts to more than 50 millimetres locally. Time span: continuing until late Sunday. Significant ponding of water may occur on roads and soil.
